Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the speed camera locations from?
The database is downloadable from Pocket GPS World for use with SatNav and portable GPS units.
Why do I have to zoom in before I can see the cameras?
Because there are over 3500 of them in the database, so trying to draw them all at once would take hours.
My browser seems to hang sometimes when I'm scrolling around.
The simple answer is to use Firefox instead of Inernet Explorer, as it is much, much quicker and you'll hardly notice the pauses. The Google Maps API is not particularly efficient at drawing markers, so if you scroll to an area with a number of speed cameras, such as Central London, it can take some time to draw all the markers. For some reason Firefox handles them better than IE.
I can't seem to get it to work, what's wrong?
It has been tested in Firefox & IE. If you are having problems please email me with details of the browser and operating system you are using.
Google Maps lets me search by address or place, why can't I do that here?
The Google Maps API doesn't currently provide access to geocoding information (getting co-ordinates from a place name or address). Fingers crossed we get it soon.
I'd like to be able to plan a route and have it show me the cameras. Is that possible?
Same problem as the placename search I'm afraid - it can't be done with the current API. Someone has come up with a workaround that allows you to use Google's route planning on your own site, but strictly speaking it breaks their Terms of Use.
